In 1979, Glasgow’s Merchant City was far from the cosmopolitan hub it is today. Neglected and shabby, the elegant streets and buildings constructed by the city’s 18th and 19th-century visionaries were hardly a magnet for restaurant-goers. Remarkably, there were no restaurants in sight. That was about to change with the visionary founder of Cafe Gandolfi, Iain MacKenzie.

Iain recognized the potential of the city’s old cheese market’s empty offices and embarked on a daring endeavor. As a photographer, he brought a sophisticated aesthetic not only to the interior but also to the food. The cafe’s name, Gandolfi, was inspired by the esteemed company, Louis Gandolfi, renowned for producing cameras synonymous with fine photography for over a century. Iain’s pioneering spirit and authentic European sensibility introduced Glasgow to its first cappuccino machine and a taste of true cafe society. The establishment arrived at a time when Glasgow was ripe for change.

In 2002, Bar Gandolfi joined the scene, and the former cheese store of the market was transformed with a keen eye for detail, under the guidance of architect John MacLeod. The establishment retained its original cheese store tiles, maximized natural light, and featured the signature Tim Stead furniture, ensuring a strong connection with Cafe Gandolfi downstairs. Over the years, the menus, both food and drinks, have evolved, hosting events from weddings to funerals and everything in between, all amidst an intimate atmosphere. The venue’s warmth and unique style have also provided a platform for artists and artisans to showcase their work from time to time.

The Coronavirus Pandemic’s devastating impact hit the hospitality industry hard. Cafe Gandolfi recognized the importance of creativity, sustainability, and evolution as it embarked on the journey of rebuilding the business. Despite the challenges, the commitment to providing fabulous food and drink remains unwavering, with the goal of continuing to be a major destination in Glasgow’s Merchant City.

Cafe Gandolfi celebrated its 40th anniversary in November 2019, a testament to its enduring appeal. Seumas, the custodian of this establishment, has now been joined by his twin sons, making the business a true family affair. Donald, serving as the General Manager, oversees the day-to-day operations, while Alasdair, one of the most talented and inventive chefs, brings his passion for food and great service. Together, they carry forward the tradition that has established Cafe Gandolfi as one of Scotland’s most famous and iconic restaurants.
